Refresher 3: Using an AED to Better the Odds

Knowing how to give CPR can save the life of someone in cardiac arrest, but the person’s best chance for recovery relies on following all of the links in the Cardiac Chain of Survival. This includes early defibrillation.

For each minute that CPR and defibrillation are delayed, the person’s chance of survival is reduced by about 10%. This fact makes you—and your quick action—the very first and most important link in the chain.

In this activity, you’ll watch a video on responding to a cardiac emergency in a scenario that involves access to an AED. At each pause in the action, you’ll decide how to proceed and see if you can save a life.
